Duane “Keefe D” Davis, the only man who’s ever been charged with Tupac Shakur’s murder, will have to wait nearly a year for his murder trial.
During a hearing held on Tuesday, February 18, Judge Carli Kierny granted a motion from the defense in which they requested more time to prepare for Davis’ trial. According to ABC News, Davis’ attorney Carl Arnold needs an extension to interview “several witnesses” who can help prove his client’s innocence. Prosecutors accused Davis of orchestrating the 1996 shooting in Las Vegas that ended the rapper’s life. However, Arnold claimed his witnesses can testify that Davis wasn’t in Sin City when the shooting happened.
“It looks like there are quite a few things that are left to be done to get this case prepared so that Mr. Davis can have effective assistance of counsel,” Judge Kierny said. “Given that, it appears as though I really don’t have much of a choice but to grant it.”
In the filing he submitted last Friday, Arnold said his private investigator discovered other witnesses who may have information that could cast doubt on the prosecution’s version of what happened on the night in question. He even accused Suge Knight’s security guard Reggie Wright Jr. and his team of executing the plot to kill 2Pac. Wright is a former police officer who testified to the grand jury who decided to indict Davis on murder charges in 2023. Arnold didn’t provide any evidence to back up his claims, however, he and his private investigator are currently interviewing the witnesses. Meanwhile, Wright denied Arnold’s claims.
“Good luck finding someone saying that, that’s credible,” Wright said. “It’s heartbreaking they keep dragging in my name. I didn’t have anything to do with that. One of the worst days of my life when I heard that that happened.”
Davis pleaded not guilty to the murder charge two months after he was arrested in Nevada. He was denied bail and has been awaiting trial in jail ever since. He was recently charged with battery after he allegedly got into a physical altercation with a fellow inmate two months ago.
