At the 48th Annual Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards on April 7, 2013, country music legends Garth Brooks and George Strait delivered a historic performance in tribute to the late Dick Clark. This event marked the first time these two iconic artists shared the stage, creating a memorable moment in country music history.
Dick Clark, a pioneering television and radio personality, was instrumental in bringing country music to a broader audience. As the longtime producer of the ACM Awards since 1979, his influence helped shape the show’s prominence in the music industry. Clark passed away on April 12, 2012, leaving behind a legacy celebrated during this special tribute.
The tribute began with Reba McEntire introducing Brooks and Strait, highlighting their significance as the most recent recipients of the ACM Artist of the Decade Award. In honor of Clark’s contributions, the Academy announced the renaming of this prestigious accolade to the ACM Dick Clark Artist of the Decade Award. McEntire, visibly moved, received a standing ovation and remarked, “[Dick Clark] would slap me if he saw me crying out here right now.”
Garth Brooks commenced the musical homage with his poignant song “The Dance,” setting a reflective tone. George Strait then joined him on stage, and together they performed Strait’s 1985 hit “The Cowboy Rides Away.” This collaboration not only honored Clark’s legacy but also symbolized a passing of the torch between two generations of country music.
Reflecting on Clark’s impact, George Strait stated, “Dick helped make country music accessible to a larger fan base and his efforts will not be forgotten.” Garth Brooks added, “There may be others who have contributed as much to the music industry, but there is definitely no one that has contributed more than Dick Clark.”
This tribute underscored Dick Clark’s enduring influence on country music and highlighted the unity and respect within the country music community.
